It was a dream come true. I got to be voluntarily poor and walk around and live on the mercy of strangers.
He didn’t realize until he came to pick me up. I mean I didn’t have a telephone. He was quite mortified.
I borrowed a big trash bag from the nuns and I walked all the streets of Assisi, because I knew them all by heart because I’d walked them, and I picked up all the tourist litter. I walked up and down the streets and greeted the old ladies who fed stray cats and greeted the fruit sellers that had fed me and gave them some money and I picked up all the litter.
Oh, my goodness.
